The Red Carpet Welcome events at community schools mark the start of a busy and exciting year for students across Erie County. The high fives and cheers from volunteers representing various corporate and lead partners along with welcome back hugs from teachers, principals, community school directors and staff created a wildly enthusiastic start to the academic school year for both students and their families this week.

#CommunitySchoolsInAction

Tuesday Aug 23rd, 2022

Thanks to your support of United Way, 11 community schools each received $2,318 which funded initiatives in the Spring 2022 academic semester. Community funded projects provide a valuable source of revenue so Community School Directors have a little extra discretionary income to add to their revenue pool for sustaining and adding additional enrichment and incentive programs as well as appreciation activities for both students and teachers. Here are just a few examples of your impact in action.

Erie FREE Taxes

Wednesday Aug 17th, 2022

Erie FREE Taxes’ work isn’t done, even though the official tax season has ended!

Post-season tax preparation began in May and will continue through the end of August, with tax preparation sites being located at two centralized locations in Erie. According to program director Marybelle Martin, people who file their taxes post-season are typically those who need to file for previous years or need to amend their 2021 tax returns.

Purposeful Placemaking continues with Erie Arts & Culture

Wednesday Aug 3rd, 2022

The Erie Arts and Culture Purposeful Placemaking initiative now includes completion of the second mural along Pfeiffer-Burleigh Elementary's Safer Walking Route to School. Leveraging art, United Way's Safer Walking Routes to School and our connections to neighborhoods through the Community Schools Model, this placemaking project is an investment in neighborhood beautification. The theme for the Remnant Store mural (pictured right), which was informed through community engagement and information gathering, is togetherness and a collective approach to building home.

United Way announces hiring of Community Schools Directors at Grover Cleveland, Jefferson and JoAnna Connell

Monday Jul 25th, 2022

Officials from United Way of Erie County in partnership with Erie’s Public Schools have announced Grover Cleveland, Jefferson and JoAnna Connell Elementary Schools will be transformed into the next three community schools, bringing the total number of schools included in the partnership to 16 countywide.

The expansion of the transformational student success initiative is being made possible by a once-in-a-lifetime infusion of federal funding over a three-year period. Once this period ends, United Way will assume financial responsibility for continued funding of the Community Schools Model at these schools.

Officials are announcing the hiring of a community school director (CSD) at each of these schools.

Union City Elementary, a United Way community school, anniversary

Thursday Jul 7th, 2022

When I was first settling into my office about a year ago today, I decorated the windows that face the hallway with plants I had made from construction paper along with the message, “Look at You Grow.” After I set it up, I didn’t think much about it, until school began. A certain 3rd grade student would walk past it almost every day and read it out loud to himself. Every few weeks, he would stop and tell me that he really liked that saying and my paper plants.

Vision To Learn: Finale

Wednesday Jun 1st, 2022

Have you ever seen a child put on a pair of corrective glasses for the first time? The smile and joy are contagious!

On the other hand, imagine going to school without being able to see properly. Odds are academic success is not going to happen with this impairment.
Erie City Moms

Erie City Moms

Wednesday May 18th, 2022

In 2016, an unlikely group of mothers began to meet on Erie’s Lower East Side. Our goal was to learn and grow with and from one another.

We had little in common on the surface. Black, white, married, single, homeless, homeowner, urban, suburban, GED graduate, college graduate, working, stay-at-home—we could list our differences for days, but every one of us was committed to our families and we all believed that the health and well-being of local mothers was critical to the health of Erie.

That same year, we launched Erie City Moms and hosted our first event at Wayne Park Baptist Church. “Moms Night Out” was free and included dinner, childcare, a woman’s story of hope and healing, community resources and prayer. As word spread, women from across the city and county overcame great obstacles to connect with us. I clearly remember one mom and her friend who walked an hour to and from Wayne Church with their five kids in tow. That is when we began offering transportation to families living within the city limits.

A book is a gift you can open again and again. - Garrison Keillor
It sounds almost too simple to be true, but when you read regularly with your children during their first years, you are giving them the biggest boost toward a successful start to kindergarten.
