Erie FREE Taxes Filing Season Opens January 25

The IRS has announced the opening of the 2021 tax filing season will be February 12, 2021. At that time, prepared tax returns will begin to be accepted and processed by the IRS. Refunds are anticipated to be released during the first week in March. Learn more

Please note that United Way Erie FREE Taxes will still begin its tax filing season on January 25, 2021, as scheduled. Prepared taxes will be held and submitted in accordance with the IRS tax filing calendar.

With the start of the filing season, it is imperative to highlight the importance Earned Income Tax Credit in helping individuals and families address financial needs. Each of United Way Erie FREE Taxes Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site focuses on helping eligible filers to claim the EITC.

Free tax preparation services will be offered throughout the tax filing season to Erie County tax filers whose 2020 income was $57,000 or less. Fourteen (14) Erie FREE Taxes sites are participating in the 2021 filing season. Both Drop Off service and traditional face-to-face service will be available.

A free online tax filing option, MyFreeTaxes.com, is also available to filers who wish to complete their own federal and state tax returns online. There is no income limit to utilize MyFreeTaxes.com.

New for this filing season is the offering of a fully remote tax preparation option for eligible tax filers in Erie County. Also, four (4) new Erie FREE Taxes sites will participate in United Way’s Erie FREE Taxes program this year. They include, East Middle School, a community school in the City of Erie, Corry Industrial Center, Corry Federal Credit Union, and American Legion Post 237 in Union City.

Interested tax filers must make an appointment. 

CDC guidelines will be observed at every Erie FREE Taxes VITA site.
