Strengthening Communications at Pfeiffer-Burleigh

Pfeiffer-Burleigh recognized the need to strengthen engagement with Autistic Support (AS) and English Language Learner (ELL) families. To address this, event communications were distributed in multiple languages, and sensory-friendly spaces were incorporated into all school events. These intentional strategies resulted in a significant increase in family participation, including the involvement of many new families. Now established as a standard practice, this inclusive approach supported through the United Way Community School Model continues to foster a welcoming and connected school community for all families, leading to improved student outcomes overall.

Building Awareness and Acceptance

An example of this was during the 24-25 school year, PB embraced several awareness initiatives, including Childhood Grief Awareness and Mental Health Awareness. A highlight came in April with Autism Acceptance and Awareness Month.

PB is home to six Autistic Support classrooms. The school worked with teachers and staff to foster an inclusive community. That spirit was most evident during a powerful moment for kindergarten student King Williams. King’s family had been named the Ambassador Family of the Year by The Autism Society, and the school honored him with a silent send-off before the Walk for Autism. More than 700 students and staff lined the halls in silence, waving streamers, blowing bubbles, and holding handmade signs. King’s mother described it as “a breathtaking experience” and a true example of what a Community School is all about.
