How Wegmans Supports United Way Community Schools
You’re checking out at Wegmans, unloading your groceries, when the cashier asks a simple question: “Would you like to donate to United Way today?”
Every year, Wegmans goes above and beyond to support our organization, from volunteering to donating, to running a successful workplace campaign, they’ve been incredibly supportive of our work with United Way Community Schools.
It’s a small moment, one that’s easy to say yes to or pass by. But that one question, asked hundreds of times a day, has quietly become one of the most powerful ways our community shows up for students and families in Erie.
United Way staff, board members, and committee members help out by volunteering to bag groceries. Since the cashiers do so much, it’s the least we could do to support them .

For over 15 years, Wegmans has partnered with us to run this scan campaign. And while it may seem simple on the surface, it’s built on something much bigger: a shared commitment to support students and families through the United Way Community School Model.
It starts with the people behind the registers. Cashiers asking that question, over and over again, knowing that each “yes” adds up. And it does. Over time, those small moments have turned into over half a million dollars invested directly into United Way Community Schools.
And their support doesn’t stop there.
Each year, Wegmans finds other ways to bring the community together for this work, like their annual Bingo event on May 13. It’s a fun night with a meaningful impact, with all proceeds benefiting United Way Community Schools. Because for Wegmans, this isn’t just about a campaign. It’s about giving back and investing in the next generation.

So next time you’re at Wegmans and hear that familiar question, know that it’s more than just a quick ask. It’s an invitation to be part of something bigger.
