Positive Youth Development – affectionately known as PYD – is Wilson’s student leadership team and a driving force behind peer engagement across the school. In just three years, the group has grown from three to nearly 20 active members. PYD students play a key role in peer relationship-building, not only at Wilson but also at Lincoln and McKinley Elementary Schools, where they mentor and connect with younger students throughout the year. In the spring, they proudly represented Wilson at the second annual United Way Community School Student Leadership Retreat.
The 2024-25 school year was bittersweet as Wilson celebrated the contributions of 12 graduating 8th-grade PYD members. One younger student shared, “I remember meeting the PYD students when I visited Wilson in 5th grade. They inspired me to get involved in student leadership.” That inspiration continues to shape Wilson’s culture – and the impact of PYD will be felt for years to come as it continues as a leadership opportunity for students.
