Creating Spaces for Students to be Themselves

Monday Apr 20th, 2026

For Marquis Wallace, the arts are more than an activity; they’re a way for students to discover who they are.

As the owner of Anansi Collaborations, Marquis has partnered with United Way Community Schools, bringing creative, student-centered programming into schools across Erie County. Through theater, music, and hands-on creative projects, he creates spaces where students can explore their ideas, express their emotions, and build confidence.

“I want them to feel like they matter, that their ideas, imagination, and voice have value.” says Marquis

In many school environments, students spend much of their day being told what to do and what the “right answer” is. In the arts, Marquis explains, there isn’t just one right answer; there’s room to experiment, collaborate, and create. And sometimes, the biggest impact happens in the smallest moments. Marquis remembers a student who once said, “I’m not good at anything.” Later, that same student proudly presented a project they had built, a scene they had acted in, or a rhythm they had created.

Community School Directors see that impact every day.

At McKinley Elementary:

Creator’s Club has become one of the most popular after-school programs. Students eagerly sign up, and families often register faster than any other activity. Their work is proudly showcased at school events like McKinley’s Multicultural Music Festival and Art Gallery.

At Elk Valley Elementary:

Community School Director Tammy Rader says Marquis gives students true ownership of their work.

“From acting and stage crew to script development and set design, students are involved in every step,” she explains. “They learn what it takes to create a successful show while building confidence, teamwork, and responsibility along the way.”

At Lincoln Elementary:

Marquis recently led a six-week residency centered around A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The program was intentionally designed so every student could participate in the final performance, whether acting, narrating, designing costumes, or creating props.

In every school he works with, Marquis helps carve out a space where creativity isn’t just allowed, it’s the whole point. And for many students, that space makes all the difference!
