Through the Community School Model, trusted relationships make it possible to quickly connect families with the resources they need. This past school year, a teacher learned that one of their students couldn’t complete homework because there was no electricity at home. When the Community School Team reached out to learn more, they discovered the student’s mother had recently left an abusive situation and was facing nearly $6,000 in overdue utility bills. Despite working full-time at a daycare, she wasn’t earning enough to make ends meet, and without internet access, she struggled to apply for assistance.
The Iroquois Team invited her to the school to use their internet and technology, and guided her through the application process. Within days, her electricity was restored, and all other overdue balances were cleared – giving her a fresh start. Grateful for the support, she brought in a handmade gift to the team to show her appreciation. This is the impact and power of the Community School Model: helping families overcome immediate crises so students can focus on learning.
