Last year, what started as a friendly competition between Perry Elementary School and Grover Cleveland Elementary School, both United Way Community Schools, has grown into something much bigger.
On Thursday, March 26, students from nine United Way Community Schools came together for an evening of problem solving, quick thinking, and high energy as they competed in Challenge 24.
So, what is Challenge 24?

Challenge 24 is a nationally recognized math competition, often compared to a spelling bee, but for numbers. Students use a set of numbers and basic arithmetic operations to reach the number 24. Along the way, they build mental math skills, strengthen communication, and learn to think quickly under pressure.
Leading up to the event, each school hosted an after-school program focused on preparing students for the competition. From there, four of their top-performing students were selected to represent their school.
Energetic, Competitive and Supportive...
The energy in the room was exciting, competitive, and incredibly supportive. Families, staff, and peers gathered to cheer on students as they worked through each round.
"My son has been practicing for this competition since this summer. It's been so great seeing him get into something that is both fun and academically focused!" -Grover Cleveland Elementary Parent
Moments like these highlight more than academic skills; they represent confidence, teamwork, and the impact of creating opportunities for students to shine outside their comfort zone.
United Way Community Schools in Action...
We’re excited to share that this year’s Challenge 24 winners were all representatives from Diehl Elementary, a United Way Community School.
This event was possible thanks to the volunteers who helped proctor, cheer on students, and keep everything running smoothly. We’re especially grateful for Big Ideas Learning, JoAnna Connell Elementary School Corporate Partner, along with the dedicated teachers and United Way Community School Directors, who supported students every step of the way.
Events like Challenge 24 are important because they bring families together and showcase what’s possible when students are given opportunities to grow, lead, and succeed.
