United Way of Erie County has named Laurie B. Root Senior Vice President, Resource Development. In her role, Laurie will be responsible for overseeing the annual campaign, the Imagination Library and companion Reading Buddies program, and working closely with Investor Relations to integrate best practices to all resource development activities. She will also lead on several special events throughout the year.
Laurie joined the United Way team in 2010, returning to Erie after living in the Washington DC metro area for 30 years, where she was a successful association executive for several national trade and professional organizations. Her most recent role at United Way was Vice President, Investor Relations where she oversaw the launch of the Imagination Library and led in the creation of the Reading Buddies program, developed the Loyal Contributors program, and was the staff leader overseeing the Young Leaders Society, Leadership Giving Steering and Investor Committees, as well as the Volunteer Engagement Cabinet.
Laurie is a graduate of Hollins College (now University) and alumna of the Betsy Magness Leadership Institute, Class XVIII. She is on the Athena Governing Body, Rotary Club of Erie Board of Directors, Northwest Institute of Research Board of Directors, AAUW and Women’s Roundtable member and recipient of the 2013 Athena Leadership Award.
United Way also announced that John Steven Simon has rejoined the organization as Assistant Vice President of Investor Relations.
An Erie native, Simon is a graduate of Mercyhurst Prep and received his B.S. degree cum laude from Allegheny College. He also attended the University of Pittsburgh School Of Law.
Simon most recently held the position of Pubic Relations Manager at Shriners Hospitals for Children - Erie. He previously served at United Way for eight years as the director of marketing & brand management. In this role, he was responsible for a variety of activities including the development of key marketing strategies in support of the agency’s community impact agenda, the coordination of communications with the media and contributors, the implementation of social networking initiatives and the organization of various special events. Prior to joining the United Way, Simon was a junior video editor with Erie Insurance.
Simon’s community involvement includes serving on the Advisory Panel for ATHENA PowerLink, board member of Young Erie Professionals, board member of the Church of the Nativity and a graduate of Leadership Erie.
