The Reading Buddies program, where parents and other caring adults can come to learn about the importance of reading to children, will have two events in February.
Kinship Care, a program through Penn State Cooperative Extension, will host Reading Buddies on Saturday, February 7. And, La Leche League will host Reading Buddies on Thursday, February 19. Both of these Reading Buddies events will take place as part of the host group’s regularly scheduled meetings and will also include other fun and educational activities.
Kinship Care is a support group for adults raising children of family members. It is a great fit for Reading Buddies because it is important for all caring adults to contribute to a child’s growth through reading together. Other activities at the Kinship Care Winter Gathering will include a segment about how to budget, how to play the ukulele, as well as children’s crafts and baking sugar cookies.
The deadline to register for Kinship Care’s Winter Gathering with Reading Buddies is Monday, February 2. The event will take place on February 7th at Crossroads Community Baptist Church, 5827 Old Re from 9:30am – 12pm.
La Leche League is an international non-profit whose mission is to help mothers worldwide to breastfeed through mother-to-mother support, encouragement, information, and education, and to promote a better understanding of breastfeeding as an important element in the healthy development of baby and mother. La Leche League of Erie, PA has a rotating series, consisting of four meetings, the series meeting topic for the month of February is "Bringing Home Baby" where the group will be exploring the art of reading to your child. There will be an emphasis on breastfeeding and its effects on language development. Meetings are open to pregnant and nursing mothers and their children. La Leche League of Erie, PA holds their meetings on the third Thursday of the month at the Glenwood YMCA. This Reading Buddies event will take place Thursday, February 19, from 6pm – 8pm in the Preschool Room at the Glenwood Y.
At each Reading Buddies event there is always free child care, refreshments and raffle prizes including a $25 gift card and a Hallmark Interactive Story Buddy. Presenters discuss the importance of kindergarten readiness and give tips on how to make the most of their time reading with their children.
Organizations like these are a great fit for Reading Buddies because it is essential to educate parents and other caring adults on reading to their children from the time they are born. The first five years are incredibly important in children’s development. Even before children can comprehend what is being said, they can experience the bond of the special time reading with a caring adult, begin to focus on pictures and associate them with an emotion, and love the sound of language. Reading to children at an early age helps them to develop a love of reading and learning that will benefit them throughout their lives.
